This photograph of a red fox was taken at American Camp on San Juan Island in Washington State.
Contrary to what their name suggests, red foxes can be orange, silver, black, or any combination thereof — but all have a bushy, white-tipped tail.
The red foxes in American Camp hunt for voles and mice; they also eat insects, birds, snakes, rabbits, nuts, and berries. Unfortunately, some visitors to the national park have fed the foxes, which is bad for their health and creates safety issues because they come close to the road to beg.
American Camp is on the south side of San Juan Island, part of the San Juan Island National Historical Park.
