As John and I have been doing events, podcasts, book clubs, and interviews, we get asked a lot about the Tasmanian devils of Devils Island.
We heard the devils while on Maria Island (on which the book’s fictional Marbury Island was based), but we didn’t get to meet them until we visited the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary after our hiking and camping adventure.
If you’ve never heard the shrieks and yowls and growls of the Tasmanian devil, have a listen here. You will hear right away why they got their name; being heard before being seen really worked against these little animals.
Yet despite their unholy sounds, Tassie devils are in fact adorable. Check out the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary website for photos of devils (and many other amazing Australian creatures).

The Tasmanian devils are solitary creatures who come together to feast … and to fight over the very feast they’ve all called each other to enjoy. So despite their wild sounds, they are nocturnal, keep to themselves, and are very interested in humans.
